What does Astanga Yog mean?

Astanga Yog is the union of the eight limbs of yoga, into one complete, holistic system. These eight-limbs of yoga represent the various branches of the philosophy of the yoga sutras.

 

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras defines Astanga Yog and the eight limbs as:

Yama - moral codes

• Ahimsa - non-harming or non-violence in thought, word and deed

• Satya - truthfulness

• Asteya - non-stealing

• Brahmacharya - celibacy or 'right use of energy

• Aparigraha - non-greed or non-hoarding

 

Niyama - self-purification and study

• Saucha - cleanliness

• Santosha - contentment

• Tapas - self-discipline

• Savadhyaya - self-reflectionan

• Ishvarorsnidhana - surrender to Divine

 

Asana - posture

Pranayama - breathing

Pratyahara - sense control

Dharana - concentration

Dhyana - meditation

Samadhi - ultimate bliss

 

The yamas teach us principles and values, which lay the foundations of social behavior.

The Niyamas refer to duties directed towards ourselves - inner observances, which is intended to help us build Caritra - character and reputation.

Yoga Chikitsa: The first series of Astanga Yoga - Yoga Therapy 

 

Yoga Chikitsa is a distinctive therapeutic offering by YogJiwan. This program was conceived in order to reach out to everyone with a variety of health conditions for whom it would be beneficial to go through the treatment at their pace and at their own convenient time.

 

Yoga Chikitsa is solely at the discretion of the medical team based on individual need, keeping in mind each person’s health conditions.

 

Everything about the program is subject to customisation, right from the duration of stay to diet, medication and therapeutic procedures. The approach and schedules followed are more tailored to one’s needs and more flexible than other therapeutic programs, without diluting the potency of what is offered.
